Erbil, Iraq – International media reports, citing Reuters, indicate that a drone attack targeted a military facility belonging to the Kurdistan Democratic Party of Iran (KDPI). This facility is located deep within Iraqi Kurdistan.
This escalation comes amid ongoing security tensions.
These tensions are also present in border areas and mountainous enclaves where the Iranian Kurdish opposition is based.
Details of the attack and casualties
According to initial reports, a drone targeted a weapons and ammunition depot belonging to the party. As a result, explosions were heard in the surrounding areas.
Despite the precision of the strike and the sensitive nature of the site, security and field sources confirmed that there were no casualties. Moreover, there was no loss of life.
No injuries were reported among fighters or civilians residing near the site.
The damage was limited to the material aspects of the depot structure and some of the equipment stored inside.
Context of regional tension
This attack comes at a sensitive time. Tehran has consistently accused Kurdish opposition groups based in northern Iraq of fomenting unrest within Iran and smuggling weapons.
Iranian forces have previously launched missile and drone attacks against these groups’ headquarters.
The Iraqi government and the Kurdistan Regional Government have called for the disarmament of these factions. Additionally, they demanded stricter security along their shared border.
