Baghdad, Iraq – The Iraqi capital, Baghdad, witnessed a dangerous security escalation. The US embassy compound in the fortified “Green Zone” was subjected to simultaneous attacks. This led to a state of widespread security alert and questions about the nature of the breaches. These breaches affected the most fortified diplomatic headquarters in the country.
Plumes of smoke are rising from the complex
Iraqi security sources told Reuters that the US embassy was targeted by a heavy rocket attack. Notably, thick plumes of smoke were seen rising from within the embassy compound following a series of explosions.
The sources did not provide further details on the extent of casualties or damage caused by the attack. This happened amid a tight security cordon around the area.
Helicopter landing pad hit
In further detail regarding the nature of the targets hit, the Associated Press quoted security officials. They confirmed that Katyusha rockets directly struck the helicopter landing pad within the U.S. Embassy compound.
This attack was tactically precise. It aimed to disrupt air evacuations or the rapid movement of diplomats and security personnel within the compound.
Double drone attack
In a related development, the attacks were not limited to missiles. Al Arabiya previously quoted an Iraqi security source as saying that the embassy was also attacked by a suicide drone.
This variety of attack methods indicates a high level of coordination. It was aimed at overcoming the C-RAM (Central Air Defense System) systems responsible for protecting the compound.
Regional tensions and repercussions
This attack comes at a time of escalating geopolitical tensions in the region. There has been a recent surge in attacks targeting US interests in Iraq.
All eyes are now on Washington’s response. This is especially important since the attack targeted vital facilities within the embassy, such as the helicopter landing pad.
This could prompt a military response or increased political pressure on the Iraqi government. The goal would be to control the proliferation of weapons and ensure the security of diplomatic missions.
As of yet, neither the US State Department nor the Iraqi Joint Operations Command has issued an official statement identifying the perpetrators of the attack. They also have not provided a final tally of casualties.
