London, United Kingdom – British Defence Secretary John Healey announced on Thursday that his country is considering additional options for deploying military forces to the Gulf region, amid escalating attacks targeting ships and shipping lanes. These remarks came amid accusations against Iran of escalating tensions in the region.
Healey explained that Britain already has independent mine-clearing systems in place in the region. However, he confirmed that it is currently discussing additional options with its allies to bolster its military capabilities. Furthermore, it seeks to ensure the security of navigation in vital waterways, especially when considering the deployment of new forces.
Strengthening the military presence in the Gulf
The British Defense Secretary said the government has begun reviewing options for deploying additional forces to the Gulf in coordination with allies, emphasizing the role of these forces in maintaining security. He also noted that London is closely monitoring security developments in the region.
He added that these steps are part of international efforts to protect shipping lanes. This aims to secure global trade, particularly in light of the escalating tensions in the region recently, and the need for mobilising various forces to maintain order.
British minesweeper towed
The Royal Navy announced last week the return of its last minesweeper from the Gulf. This was HMS Middleton, which had been based in Bahrain. It returned to Britain on March 1st.
The Navy explained that the ship, which is over 40 years old, was no longer seaworthy after many years of service. These developments have therefore prompted London to rely on independent and advanced systems for carrying out naval mine-clearing operations as opposed to traditional naval forces.
Tensions escalate in the Strait of Hormuz
These developments come as informed sources reported that Iran deployed approximately 12 naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a strategic waterway through which a significant portion of the world’s oil and gas exports pass, making it crucial for the movement of maritime forces.
The US military stated that it targeted Iranian mine-laying vessels and destroyed 16 such vessels during military operations conducted on Tuesday. This was part of efforts to protect international shipping.
The British Defense Secretary described these developments as a major escalation by Iran. He asserted that threatening maritime navigation constitutes a violation of international law and carries serious implications for oil prices, the global economy, and the cost of living. For that reason, allied forces may need to increase their presence in the region.
