Cairo, Egypt – In a decisive and unified Arab stance, Cairo hosted an extraordinary session of the Arab League Council at the ministerial level on Sunday. The session was marked by a strong condemnation of Iran’s continued violations of Arab sovereignty.
The Secretary-General of the League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, affirmed that Arab states stand united
in rejecting any aggression targeting their security or violating their territorial integrity and airspace.
He also stressed that targeting civilians and vital infrastructure constitutes
a direct threat to Arab national security that cannot be tolerated.
A violation of good neighborliness principles and an undermining of diplomatic efforts
In his address, Aboul Gheit clarified that the missile attacks targeting Arab countries, particularly the United Arab Emirates,
constitute aggressions categorically rejected by both governments and peoples.
He noted with bitterness that pivotal Arab states, such as Oman, Egypt, and Qatar, had exerted strenuous efforts
to spare the region—including Iran itself—the dangers of sliding into war.
However, the Iranian response, through the launching of missiles and drones, proved disappointing.
The Secretary-General stated, “Responding to diplomatic efforts with missiles reflects a reckless policy that further isolates Tehran at this critical juncture.”
He reiterated that Arab states are not parties to the ongoing conflict and have previously declared
their unequivocal rejection of the use of their territories or airspace as launching points for any military operations.
Calls for international action and protection of sovereignty
The Arab League called on the international community, and the Security Council in particular, to take immediate action to stop these attacks,
which blatantly disregard international laws, conventions, and the principles of good neighborliness.
Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit also called on Iran to review its policies, immediately cease its attacks,
and return to dialogue and diplomacy as the only way to resolve outstanding issues.
This diplomatic activity coincided with the UAE Ministry of Defense’s announcement today, March 8, 2026,
that its air defenses had successfully intercepted and destroyed 16 out of 17 ballistic missiles,
in addition to intercepting dozens of drones, reflecting the scale of the direct threat facing the region.
This further underscores the legitimacy of the Arab position demanding a halt to the war machine and the protection of regional stability.
