Geneva, Switzerland – The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has warned of a worsening humanitarian situation in Lebanon, stating that nearly 100,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in recent days due to escalating military activity and deteriorating security conditions in several areas.
The UNHCR explained that the waves of displacement are increasing rapidly as shelling and tensions continue. This is placing immense pressure on infrastructure and basic services in the areas receiving the displaced. Lebanon is already grappling with a severe economic and humanitarian crisis.
UNHCR officials indicated that thousands of families have fled their homes in search of safer areas. Many have sought refuge in schools, community centers, or with relatives, amid growing shortages of food, water, and healthcare.
The UNHCR stressed that the situation requires an urgent humanitarian response from the international community. It called for immediate support for the displaced and the provision of essential aid. This comes especially as the number of people fleeing the conflict zones is expected to rise if the escalation continues.
Observers warn that continued fighting could trigger even larger waves of displacement in the coming days, threatening to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon to an unprecedented degree.
