Berlin, Germany – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that the United States has sought in recent weeks to reach a negotiated solution with Iran regarding its nuclear program, but Tehran has not agreed to a comprehensive, reliable and verifiable agreement that would end its military nuclear program.
American efforts for a settlement
Mertz explained that Washington made intensive attempts to persuade the Iranian side to enter into a negotiating framework that would lead to a final settlement of the nuclear issue, ensuring full transparency and clear verification mechanisms, noting that these efforts continued for several weeks without achieving a decisive breakthrough.
Comprehensive and verifiable agreement
He added that the international community is focused on the need to reach an agreement that is comprehensive and credible, and subject to strict monitoring and verification mechanisms that ensure the end of any military dimensions of the Iranian nuclear program, thereby enhancing regional stability and dispelling concerns about nuclear proliferation.
Complexities of the regional landscape
Mertz’s remarks come amid escalating tensions in the region and growing international pressure to revive the diplomatic track, amid fears that the failure of negotiations could lead to further political or military escalation, at a time when Western powers are emphasizing their commitment to negotiated solutions as the first option for addressing the crisis.
