Vienna, Austria – The Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the decision by the Israeli Security Cabinet to expand its control in the occupied West Bank. It deemed the expansion a violation of international law. The Ministry emphasized that this decision contradicts the spirit of the two-state solution. This solution allows Palestinians and Israelis to live side by side. Moreover, it is the only way to achieve lasting peace in the region.
A position compatible with the European Union
Austria’s position was consistent with that of the European Commission. The Commission deemed Israel’s plans a step in the wrong direction and contrary to efforts to achieve regional stability. The European Union noted that these measures create facts on the ground. Fundamentally, these facts contradict the Oslo Accords. The Accords prohibit Israel from exercising civil authority in Areas A and B.
Austria calls for respect for the law
Austria also stressed that respect for international law is the path to ensuring peace and security in the region. It warned that the continuation of these policies could have counterproductive results for efforts to achieve Palestinian-Israeli stability. In addition, Austria emphasized the need for Israel to cease unilateral actions that undermine a political solution. The country called on the international community to exert pressure to return to the path of peaceful negotiations.
These developments come amidst ongoing European and international diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions in the occupied Palestinian territories. They are also intended to ensure the protection of civilian rights in accordance with international humanitarian law.
