Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump said the United States is trying to reach an agreement with Iran, expressing his belief that an understanding could be reached within the next month.
He also warned of “very serious consequences” should the diplomatic track fail.
In remarks to reporters, Trump explained that reaching an agreement has become essential, adding,
“We have to make a deal with Iran, otherwise the consequences will be very serious.”
He noted that he had a “good” meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu,
confirming that the latter understands the American position and did not ask him to stop communicating with Tehran.
military confrontation
Trump added that Iran “should have made a deal when we struck them last time,”
referring to a previous escalation between the two sides,
without providing further details about the nature of that strike.
For his part, Netanyahu, in remarks made before leaving Washington,
expressed his hope that Trump’s efforts would help create the conditions
for an agreement that would spare the region any military confrontation.
However, he stressed that any potential agreement must take into account what he described as “vital elements” for Israel,
foremost among them the Iranian nuclear program, ballistic missiles, and the armed groups supported by Tehran in the region.
Multiple international fronts
In another context, Trump stated that “the Israeli president should be ashamed of himself for not pardoning Netanyahu,”
describing the latter’s trial as “disgraceful,” referring to the legal cases facing the Israeli prime minister.
The US president also announced his intention to visit China next April,
a move reflecting the continuation of American diplomatic efforts on multiple international fronts.
These statements come amidst escalating regional tensions and international anticipation of any developments
that may occur in the course of relations between Washington and Tehran in the coming weeks.
