Brussels, Belgium – UN Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the attack on a mosque in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. He described the incident as “horrific and unacceptable.”
In an official statement, a spokesperson for the international organization said that Guterres “condemns in the strongest terms” the attack.
The spokesperson also stressed the need to protect places of worship and ensure the safety of civilians in all circumstances. In addition, the United Nations, as a body of nations, reiterated its call for peace and security worldwide.
The statement added that the Secretary-General calls on Pakistani authorities to conduct an urgent investigation into the incident and hold those responsible to account. He also called for a focus on preventing the recurrence of such attacks in the future.
The Secretary-General expressed the UN’s solidarity with the families of the victims and the worshippers. He emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity in confronting all forms of violence and extremism.
