Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump sparked a wave of sharp criticism on Friday after posting a satirical video on his Truth Social platform. The video, which includes insults directed at former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, has reignited long-standing tensions between the two sides.
According to viewers, the nearly one-minute video concludes with a brief segment in which Barack and Michelle Obama’s faces are transformed into caricatures of monkeys for a few seconds. Critics considered this scene to be racially suggestive, while Trump supporters viewed it as “political satire.”
Video details
The video, posted Friday morning, begins with a montage of old clips from Barack Obama’s speeches, set to comedic music. In the final seconds, the controversial clip appears with a voiceover saying, “This is what the real thing looks like.” Trump did not add any direct text comment, only including hashtags such as #ObamaFail and #TruthWins.
The post quickly garnered millions of views within hours, sparking widespread reaction and sharply divided opinions.
Context of the dispute
The feud between Trump and the Obama family dates back years, to the 2016 presidential campaign. At that time, Trump repeatedly accused Obama, including of spying on his campaign. Tensions continued afterward, with Michelle Obama publicly criticizing Trump, particularly in her memoir, “Becoming.”
In recent years, Trump has intensified his use of TruthSocial to attack prominent Democratic figures. This has occurred within a context of escalating political polarization, especially as the upcoming elections approach.
