Beijing, China – Chinese state media reported that Chinese President Xi Jinping held a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, in a move reflecting the continuation of direct communication channels between the world’s two largest economies, amid complex political and economic issues on the international stage.
China Central Television said the phone conversation took place between the two presidents, without revealing extensive details about its content or the issues discussed during the call. There has also been no official comment from the White House regarding the content of the call or its precise timing.
This contact comes at a time when relations between Beijing and Washington are increasingly sensitive, amid sharp differences over a number of issues, including international trade, technological competition, regional security issues, as well as geopolitical developments in East Asia, the war in Ukraine, and the crises in the Middle East.
The Chinese and American presidents have held several face-to-face meetings in recent years on the sidelines of international summits, the last of which was a bilateral meeting in South Korea in October 2025, where they stressed the importance of managing differences between the two countries and preventing them from turning into open conflicts, while keeping channels of dialogue open at the highest levels.
Observers believe that direct contacts between the two countries’ leaderships represent an indication of a mutual desire to contain tensions and avoid escalation, especially given the broad impact of any Chinese-American tension on the global economy, supply chains, and international financial markets.
These talks also come at a time when the world is witnessing intensive diplomatic activity on more than one front, amid international efforts to reduce the intensity of existing conflicts and promote economic and political stability, amid fears of a slowdown in global growth and escalating geopolitical risks.
