Baghdad, Iraq – The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces and Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, chaired a crucial meeting of the National Security Council on Monday. The meeting was dedicated to finalizing the transfer of ISIS terrorists from Syrian prisons to Iraqi territory.
A unified committee and a comprehensive security plan
The Council, in its meeting, approved a comprehensive roadmap and the formation of a unified security committee to oversee all stages of the process, from transfer to presentation before the courts. The meeting emphasized that the decision is purely national and security-related, primarily aimed at protecting Iraq’s national security. It stressed the necessity of continued cooperation with the leadership of the international coalition, while also calling upon the international community to fulfill its responsibilities regarding this complex issue.
Judicial and diplomatic mobilization
Alongside the security measures, judicial and diplomatic efforts emerged to ensure the process was completed according to legal standards. For this reason, the head of the Supreme Judicial Council, Judge Faiq Zaidan, called for close coordination between the judiciary, the Ministries of Interior and Justice, and relevant agencies to launch immediate investigations and trials of the transferred detainees. Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein also emphasized that Iraq would not bear the security and financial burdens of this case alone. He stressed that it was a shared international responsibility incumbent upon all concerned countries.
Details of the transfer process
This move comes as Iraq prepares to receive some 7,000 ISIS detainees held in Syria. They are scheduled to arrive in successive batches. The first group of 150 has already arrived, and the screening, investigation, and trial processes will begin with them.
