Ankara, Turkey – A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Sandirgi district of Balıkesir province in western Turkey early Saturday morning. The quake caused concern among residents in the surrounding areas. The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 11 kilometers. No casualties or damage have been reported so far, and field surveys and assessments are ongoing in the area.
For his part, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced in a post on the Turkish social media platform “InSocial” that specialized teams immediately began field surveys to assess any potential damage or injuries. He also noted that relevant authorities are closely monitoring developments. It is worth mentioning that the Sandirgi district experienced a 6.1 magnitude earthquake on October 27th of last year. That earthquake did not result in any casualties, reflecting the significant seismic activity the region experiences from time to time.
