Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump, speaking at a session of the World Economic Forum in Davos, stated that the United States has given much to Europe over the decades.
He emphasized that his country expects a political and strategic return in the form of Greenland.
Trump described Greenland as being of paramount importance to US national security.
And he added that Washington has played a leading role in protecting Europe, ensuring its security
and military stability. Moreover, the United States has borne enormous financial burdens through NATO.
He stressed that the time has come to reassess the relationship with European allies based on “mutual interests.”
The US president explained that Greenland represents a highly strategic location, whether from a geopolitical, military, or economic perspective.
We will not annex Greenland by force
He noted that global changes, including competition with major powers,
necessitate that the United States strengthen its presence in strategically vital regions.
At the same time, Trump was careful to deny any intention of using force to annex Greenland,
saying, “I don’t want to use force to annex Greenland.”
He emphasized that his country prefers peaceful solutions and political understandings to achieve its goals.
In addition, he said that any move in this direction must be through dialogue and consensus.
Trump pointed out that the United States had previously presented clear proposals on this matter.
A pivotal player in international relations
He considered the idea of annexing Greenland not new, but rather part of
a long-term American vision to enhance national security.
This vision aims to confront escalating international challenges, particularly in the Arctic region.
Trump’s remarks elicited mixed reactions at the Davos summit.
Some participants saw them as reflecting a clear shift in US policy toward Europe,
while others viewed them as political and economic pressure on European allies.
They believed it was a push to reassess their partnership priorities with Washington.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is attracting increasing attention
from international powers due to its geographical location and natural resources. This makes it a crucial player in international relations in the coming period.
