Gaza, Palestine – The director of UNRWA affairs described the demolition of the agency’s headquarters in Jerusalem as “horrific.” He emphasized that the incident constitutes a direct attack on a UN agency providing humanitarian services to millions of Palestinian refugees.
The UN official noted that the demolition not only damages the agency’s infrastructure but also deals a severe blow to the relief, education, and health efforts upon which thousands of Palestinian families depend. He also warned of serious repercussions for the already deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Palestinian territories.
He added that this action contravenes international laws and conventions that guarantee the protection of UN institutions. He called on the international community to uphold its responsibilities and halt the violations targeting the agency’s work and its staff.
These statements come at a time of increasing pressure on UNRWA amid escalating political and security tensions in Jerusalem. This deepens fears of undermining the agency’s humanitarian role and the direct impact this will have on the lives of Palestinian refugees.
