Damascus, Syria – The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that it conducted a precision airstrike in northwestern Syria that killed a senior al-Qaeda leader. This was the third round of retaliatory strikes launched by the United States in response to attacks on its forces in the region. In an official statement, CENTCOM confirmed that the strike, carried out last Friday, killed Bilal Hassan al-Jassem. The statement described al-Jassem as a “veteran terrorist leader” and a key planner of armed operations. It explained that al-Jassem had direct ties to an ISIS operative suspected of being responsible for the deadly attack on December 13.
This operation comes in response to the attack that killed three Americans last month: Sergeant Edgar Bryan Torres-Tovar, Sergeant William Nathaniel Howard, and civilian interpreter Ayad Mansour Skat. In a strongly worded statement, Admiral Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, said: “The killing of a terrorist operative linked to the murder of three Americans demonstrates our resolve to hunt down terrorists who attack our forces. There is no safe haven for those who carry out, plan, or incite attacks against our citizens… We will find you.”
This airstrike is part of a broader military operation ordered by President Donald Trump. This operation targets ISIS cells and affiliated groups. These groups are attempting to exploit the security vacuum to regroup nearly a year after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. On the other hand, US reports indicate that Washington seeks to send a clear message through these precise strikes. This message is that the political changes in Syria will not affect its counterterrorism strategy or its efforts to protect its forces and interests in the region.
