Moscow, Russia – Russia said on Thursday that accusations by Western countries that Russia and China are threatening the security of Greenland are unacceptable. It also asserted that the crisis surrounding the island clearly exposes what it called the West’s double standards in applying the so-called “rules-based international order.”
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told Reuters that Western rhetoric on Greenland is riddled with contradictions. She noted that some Western countries have shifted from talking about the existence of “potential aggressors” to promoting the idea of being prepared to “protect” other parties from these aggressors. However, they have not provided clear legal or political justifications.
Zakharova added that this approach reflects, in her words, a deep flaw in the concept of the international order promoted by the West. She further explained that recent developments highlight the inconsistency of the so-called “rules-based order,” which is applied selectively according to the political interests of Western countries.
The Russian official affirmed that Moscow stands in solidarity with China’s position rejecting any connection between Russian or Chinese activities in the vicinity of Greenland and the current escalation. She also asserted that these accusations are being used as a pretext to justify military and political moves by Western actors in the Arctic region.
Zakharova emphasized that Russia views this escalation as yet another example of the West’s attempts to create artificial crises. She added that the West presents itself as a guarantor of security and stability while disregarding the principles of international law and respect for the sovereignty of states.
These Russian statements come at a time when the Arctic region is witnessing increased international attention due to strategic, economic, and security considerations. This is occurring amidst escalating competition between major powers and a growing exchange of criticism regarding military maneuvers and political influence in this sensitive region.
