Darfur, Sudan – The civilian administration of the Rapid Support Forces has begun practical procedures to establish an independent banking system.
This system is for the areas under its control in the Darfur region of western Sudan.
It is being done by launching the first banking institution under the name of “Future Bank”.
“adopting “electronic banking
The head of the civil administration in East Darfur State, Mohamed Idris Khater, announced that a meeting would be held in the city of Al-Daein.
It will be with the committee tasked with laying the foundations for this system.
In statements broadcast by the state radio, Khater explained that the new bank aims to find radical solutions to the acute cash liquidity crisis.
It also addresses the cessation of the traditional banking system in the states of Darfur and Kordofan.
Khater pointed out that the new system will rely primarily on “electronic services.” This is to ensure a safe and stable banking environment.
This is without revealing additional technical details relating to the nature of the bank (central or commercial).
Also, no details on the size of its capital and the entities contributing to it were disclosed.
“recommendations of the “Nyala
This step comes in implementation of the outcomes of the economic conference organized by the civil administration in Nyala in May 2025.
The conference at that time recommended the need to create an alternative banking system.
This system should be compatible with the reality of field control.
It aims to stimulate local economic activity and facilitate trade.
This is meant as compensation for the departure of official banks from the western Sudanese states following the outbreak of war.
Challenges and concerns
Observers believe that the Rapid Support Forces’ attempt to establish the “Future” bank represents
a shift from purely military control to an attempt to impose a new “economic reality”.
This could deepen the state of financial division in the country.
Moreover, it may pose major challenges to unifying the Sudanese monetary system in the future.
In addition to questions regarding international recognition of such institutions in light of the ongoing conflict.
