Fujairah, UAE – The President of the Fujairah Fishermen’s Association, Mahmoud Hassan Al Ali, confirmed that the month of Ramadan constitutes a different season in the lives of fishermen.
He pointed out that maritime practices during the holy month change in harmony with the spirit of worship and compassion that characterizes it.
He said that fishing these days turns into a social message before it is an economic activity.
He added that the custom of “wadam” or “hilla” is one of the most prominent manifestations inherited from fathers and grandfathers.
The bulk of the catch is allocated for distribution, rather than being put on the market.
He explained that upon returning to the port, the fisherman allocates the large quantity to neighbors, relatives, and needy families, and delivers it to their homes in appreciation of their circumstances.
He pointed out that more than 40 fishermen in Fujairah still adhere to this custom and consider it part of their marine and social identity.
He pointed out that the fish that are distributed are among the favorite types in Ramadan, such as kingfish, grouper, and log.
In addition to other varieties rich in meat and low in bones, families prefer it in Farid and Makbous dishes, to meet the needs of families during the holy month.
He stressed that the fishing community in Fujairah views the fishing profession as a moral legacy before it is an economic activity.
It is based on a system of cooperation, compassion and solidarity.
He explained that needy families do not have the ability to buy fish on a regular basis, especially in light of the demands of living.
Which makes the «Al-Wadam» initiative direct support that relieves it of the burdens of the holy month and preserves its dignity without embarrassment or request.
He explained that fishermen treat this custom as a social responsibility.
They are keen to deliver fish to the homes of needy people, especially senior citizens and those who cannot come to the port.
He stressed that the aim of these initiatives is for everyone to be satisfied during the holy month.
