Tehran, Iran – International human rights organizations have revealed a bloody toll from the latest wave of protests in Iran, with reports indicating that at least 29 people, including three children, have been killed since the demonstrations began ten days ago.
Casualty figures and arrests
According to data from the Iranian human rights organization HRANA, the deaths occurred during the first nine days of the protests.
The organization stated that two of the dead were members of the Iranian security forces, while the remaining victims were civilians and protesters. Regarding security crackdowns, HRANA estimated that more than 1,200 people were arrested in various Iranian cities that witnessed unrest and clashes with security forces.
Challenges of field verification
These figures come amid an official media blackout, as Iranian authorities continue to impose strict restrictions on independent journalism and ban the activities of many human rights organizations within the country. Iran also experiences severe communication difficulties and frequent internet outages, making it difficult to fully and accurately verify these figures from official sources. Meanwhile, international media outlets are still working to independently ascertain the identities of the victims and the circumstances of their deaths.
