Washington, DC – The US Federal Aviation Administration announced Saturday the closure of Caribbean airspace to commercial flights. This comes amid escalating tensions following the US military operation in Venezuela that resulted in the capture of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife and their removal from the country.
This decision comes as a precautionary measure to protect air traffic in the region amid escalating security risks. Meanwhile, the capital, Caracas, is witnessing widespread protests by Maduro supporters, and the border with Brazil has been closed, according to statements by the head of the Brazilian Federal Police.
US President Donald Trump announced that Maduro and his wife would be traveling to New York. He confirmed that the possibility of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado leading a transitional phase was being considered. He also stated that some US soldiers involved in the operation were injured, but their injuries were not serious. He indicated that the United States would become involved in Venezuela’s oil industry.
