Tokyo, Japan – A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Pacific Ocean off the Nemuro Peninsula in Hokkaido Prefecture, northern Japan, on Saturday.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter of
the earthquake was at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers,
about 80 kilometers southeast of the city of Nemuro.
Field impacts and population safety
Despite the strength of the tremor, residents in coastal villages
and surrounding areas felt only mild tremors;
No human casualties or material damage to vital facilities
and installations have been recorded so far.
Accordingly, the authorities reassured citizens, stressing that
the situation is under control and there is no cause for concern.
Tsunami risk ruled out
In a related context, the relevant Japanese authorities confirmed
that the earthquake did not result in any tsunami warnings.
Because this region lies within the seismically active “Ring of Fire”
in the Pacific Ocean, it experiences frequent earthquakes on a regular basis.
And they often pass without serious damage thanks to the country’s
advanced earthquake-resistant infrastructure.
Follow earthquake activity
In conclusion, the relevant authorities in Hokkaido continue to closely monitor seismic activity;
This is to ensure the safety of public facilities and bridges.
Authorities then warned of the possibility of secondary aftershocks
that could follow the main earthquake.
The residents were urged to follow the usual safety guidelines in such cases.
