Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – The Saudi Geological Survey reassured citizens and residents regarding the earthquake. The tremor was recorded by stations of the National Seismic Monitoring Network in the Eastern Province early Wednesday morning. The Survey confirmed that there were no casualties or material damage as a result of the earthquake.
Earthquake details
The official spokesperson for the General Authority of Meteorology and Environmental Protection, Tariq Aba Al-Khail, explained that the earthquake occurred at 1:11 AM and measured 4 on the Richter scale.
He indicated that the epicenter was located approximately 9 kilometers east of Haradh. It was at a depth of about 8 kilometers below the Earth’s surface, at coordinates 24.1323 degrees north latitude and 49.1572 degrees east longitude, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Geological causes
Aba Al-Khail pointed out that the seismic activity in the region is due to regional tectonic factors. Among the most prominent of these factors are the pressures resulting from the collision of the Arabian Plate with the Eurasian Plate in the Zagros Mountains of Iran.
He added that these pressures activate certain geological faults in the Earth’s crust in the eastern region, subsequently causing earthquakes from time to time.
No losses observed
The official spokesperson confirmed that the tremor was classified as weak, which explains why no damage was reported. He also emphasized that the authority continues to monitor the situation through its seismic monitoring stations located throughout the Kingdom. This is part of its efforts to ensure public safety and enhance preparedness.
