Islamabad, Pakistan – Three Pakistani security sources said on Tuesday that militants attacked a security checkpoint in the northwest of the country, near the border with Afghanistan, killing six Pakistani soldiers.
The attack took place in the Kurram region, and comes at a sensitive time when Pakistan and Afghanistan are struggling to maintain a fragile truce.
The region witnessed the worst fighting between the two countries in October. The fighting, which has killed dozens on both sides, is the worst since the Taliban seized control of Kabul in 2011, according to Reuters.
Islamabad blames the escalating violence in the country on militants, claiming they use Afghan territory to plan cross-border attacks on security forces. Kabul denies these accusations, maintaining that Pakistan’s security remains its own internal matter.
