Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian and international experts have warned that the protective shield around the Chernobyl reactor is no longer able to completely block radiation. This situation threatens to increase radiation levels in the surrounding area and necessitates urgent intervention to repair it. The experts emphasized that the current structure is becoming increasingly susceptible to corrosion and deterioration. This could lead to a radioactive leak affecting the environment and local residents if drastic measures are not taken promptly.
The report indicated that maintenance and repair operations require international coordination and advanced equipment. This is to ensure the shield’s ability to contain radiation, emphasizing that any delay in intervention could significantly increase environmental and health risks.
The scientific community warned that ignoring these warnings could lead to an environmental disaster similar to the reactor accident in 1986. They called on governments and international organizations to allocate the necessary resources to complete the repairs urgently and safely.
