Washington, USA – US President Donald Trump sparked outrage in Somalia and among Somali communities around the world after making controversial remarks describing Somalia as a “shithole country”.

He stressed that the United States “does not want to receive his immigrants.”

The statements, which were issued following the revelation of

a major financial scandal in the state of Minnesota,

Authorities said that about $1 billion disappeared as a result

of fraudulent invoices involving a number of Americans of Somali origin.

A direct insult to the people of Somalia

During a meeting of the US government, Trump accused Somali immigrants of being ungrateful.

He added: “We don’t want them in our country, and in Somalia they own nothing.”

Observers considered those statements a direct insult to an entire people.

The Somali government has not yet issued any official comment,

nor has it responded to requests from the international press.

Mogadishu is ablaze and there is widespread public discontent.

In the capital, Mogadishu, many citizens expressed their shock at Trump’s statements.

They emphasized that: “This is not the first time Trump has spoken negatively about Somalia,

But his recent statements are completely unacceptable.

It is time for the Somali government to provide a clear and direct response.”

Trump withdraws support

Citizens also described Trump’s remarks as “rude,”

saying, “Every country has problems, even America itself.”

Some warned of potential political and economic repercussions.

Among them: “The United States provides significant support

to Somalia in the areas of security and counter-terrorism.”

If Trump feels challenged by the federal government,

he may not hesitate to withdraw this support.”

Repercussions of the statements

Trump’s remarks sparked a wide-ranging debate about the limits of free speech.

The impact of a former president’s personal political statements on international relations.

Especially given Somalia’s reliance on the American partnership in sensitive matters.

Ongoing context of the attack on Somalia

This is not the first time Trump has criticized Somalia or Somali immigrants.

This reinforces fears within Somali society

about the impact of his rhetoric on future US policies.

And on the image of Somalis within the United States.
