Kyiv, Ukraine – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Saturday that he has sent a high-level delegation to Washington, D.C. The aim is to hold crucial talks regarding the proposed U.S. “peace plan” to end the ongoing war with Russia.
In a post on social media, Zelenskyy noted that the Ukrainian delegation is headed by Rustam Umarov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council. He expressed his country’s desire to take “swift steps” to end the conflict.
Zelensky wrote: “Ukraine continues to work with the United States in the most constructive way possible. We expect the results of the Geneva negotiations to be finalized during the talks with the United States.”
Talks to begin tomorrow, Sunday, as the security delegation arrives
The Ukrainian president explained that the delegation would begin its talks with the American side on Sunday. He added that he was “eagerly awaiting” the results of these talks, which follow an initial round of discussions in Geneva.
The Ukrainian delegation traveling to Washington includes high-ranking security, military, and intelligence officials. This underscores the importance of the issues on the agenda. According to a statement from the Ukrainian presidency, the delegation’s most prominent members include Kyrylo Budanov, head of the intelligence department at the Ministry of Defense; Andriy Hnatov, deputy chief of the General Staff; Oleh Ivashchenko, head of the Foreign Intelligence Service; and Serhiy Kyslytsya, first deputy foreign minister.
Trump’s updated plan is under discussion
This move comes after the White House announced last Sunday a revised and updated draft peace plan. This followed intensive talks between the American and Ukrainian delegations to discuss President Donald Trump’s plan to end the war.
Washington talks are expected to focus on reaching a final version of this plan, which seeks to end the war between Moscow and Kyiv.
