Spain – The Spanish government has approved a strategic project to modernize its F-100-class frigates. The project is estimated to cost around €3.2 billion. The Spanish Ministry of Defense announced that the modernization will include all five Álvaro de Bazán-class frigates, which are currently halfway through their operational lifespan. The goal is to extend their service until 2045.
The program includes removing outdated technological components, enhancing operational efficiency and capabilities, and adapting systems to modern environmental regulations. The ministry emphasized that this project ensures the F-100 frigates will remain the cornerstone of Spain’s naval air defense for the next two decades.
This modernization is one of Madrid’s largest naval defense investments. The aim is to enhance the readiness and capabilities of its fleet in response to growing security challenges in its regional and international environment.
