Abu Dhabi, UAE – His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, received Alexander Stubb, President of Finland, in Abu Dhabi during an official visit. The visit reflects the strong bilateral relations between the two countries and their commitment to enhancing cooperation in political, economic, technological, and multilateral fields.
The visit, which coincided with the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the UAE and Finland in February 2025, was considered a pivotal moment for developing an ambitious action plan and future visions for the coming decades. Both sides emphasized the importance of cooperation in the fields of renewable energy and the green transition, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, education, space, and sustainable development.
The joint statement emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between government institutions and the private sector. The focus was on advanced and emerging technologies, the space sector, sustainable finance, clean energy, and the circular economy. Both sides commended the role of Emirati and Finnish institutions, including the Advanced Technology Research Council and the EDGE Group. Other companies involved include Nokia, Space42, Blueforce, ICE, and Business Finland, in supporting innovation and joint research.
The statement addressed joint projects in Africa and other regions. The focus was on digital education, renewable energy solutions, and enhancing resilience to climate change. This was achieved by combining the expertise of Emirati development institutions with Finnish technology partners. The two sides also emphasized cooperation in the space sector, leveraging Finland’s expertise in small satellites and Earth observation technologies. The UAE’s space exploration capabilities were also utilized, including the role of the Abu Dhabi-based company, ICE.
Both sides emphasized the importance of joint action in addressing water challenges and strengthening international cooperation. Reference was made to the 2026 UN Water Conference, which the UAE will host in partnership with Senegal. The need to invest in water-related innovation and technologies was also highlighted, including the Mohamed bin Zayed Water Initiative.
The statement reaffirmed the commitment to supporting the Women, Peace and Security agenda. It also emphasized the need to enhance women’s participation in peacebuilding and conflict prevention. The implementation of UN regional and national plans was stressed. Both sides affirmed their support for a just and comprehensive peace in Palestine and the Gaza Strip. They urged all parties to adhere to the ceasefire and alleviate the humanitarian suffering.
The statement emphasized combating hate speech, extremism, and racism. The parties seek to promote tolerance and interfaith and intercultural dialogue, and to uphold the sovereignty and unity of Sudan. They also committed to ending armed conflicts and respecting the sovereignty of states, including Ukraine. All of this is in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
The statement concluded by emphasizing the strengthening of the UAE-Finland partnership, which is based on mutual respect and shared strategic priorities. The implementation of all initiatives is being monitored through bilateral working mechanisms to ensure their timely completion.
