Spain – A senior European Commission official issued a stark warning, indicating the possibility of drone attacks on Spanish air infrastructure that could be attributed to Russia. This comes amid escalating tensions between Moscow and the European Union and a widening scope of indirect confrontation.
The European Commissioner, in remarks that drew the attention of European capitals, stated that the development of Russian drone capabilities makes any EU member state a potential target. He emphasized the need to raise the level of vigilance and strengthen air defense systems, particularly around airports and sensitive sites.
He added that Europe is facing “a new phase of unconventional threats.” He emphasized that cyberattacks and drone warfare have become tools of pressure employed by Moscow in managing its conflicts with the West. Therefore, he called for swift and unified action to fortify European airspace.
The warning has reopened the debate on European air defense, raising questions about the EU’s preparedness to counter precise and low-cost attacks, particularly given the ongoing war in Ukraine and the escalating tensions between the two sides.
