Washington, DC – A federal court in Oklahoma sentenced an Afghan man to 15 years in prison after convicting him of attempting to carry out a terrorist attack on US Election Day in November 2024.
The defendant, who was 17 years old when planning the attack, collaborated with an accomplice to obtain firearms and ammunition. His aim was to carry out a plot on behalf of ISIS. However, US intelligence agencies thwarted the operation before it could be carried out.
The defendants were arrested in October 2024. The U.S. Department of Justice confirmed that cooperation between the FBI and other intelligence agencies was crucial in thwarting the plot. The defendants will have their permanent residency status in the United States revoked and may be deported to Afghanistan after serving their sentences.
The ruling reflects the United States’ efforts to protect election security and combat domestic terrorist threats. It underscores the need for continued vigilance against any risks to the safety of citizens and society.
