Cairo, Egypt – The Egyptian National Elections Authority, headed by Judge Hazem Badawi, announced today the cancellation of elections in 19 electoral districts distributed across 7 governorates, after monitoring violations related to the discrepancy in the number of votes between the sub-committees and the general committees.
Fundamental flaws affecting integrity
Hazem Badawi confirmed during a press conference that the commission closely monitored all aspects of the electoral process, stressing that the citizen’s choice determines his representatives in parliament, and that the commission is not isolated from the aspirations of the citizens.
Badawi explained that the cancellation decision was based on what the commission had observed of violations that represented “fundamental flaws affecting the integrity and legitimacy of the voting and counting processes in those districts.” These violations included breaches in front of the polling committees, failure to provide the candidate or his representative with a copy of the vote count report, and discrepancies in the number of votes between the subcommittees and the general committees.
The Egyptian people are the “real heroes”
For his part, Counselor Ahmed Bendary, Director of the Executive Body of the Authority, affirmed that the Egyptian citizens’ rallying around their homeland and their keenness on their constitutional rights reflects their high level of awareness and their commitment to the democratic process.
In his opening remarks at the press conference announcing the results of the first phase of the House of Representatives elections, Bandari added that Egypt’s present and future are determined by its conscious people who understand the importance of parliamentary elections.
The executive director stressed that the ultimate goal of the commission is for Egypt to remain a “beacon of democracy and leadership” in the region and the world, stressing that the Egyptian people are the true heroes of the electoral process, despite the regional challenges.
