Tel Aviv, Israel – The Israeli news site Ynet reported Sunday that the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) arrested a couple from the coastal city of Kiryat Yam. They are expected to be formally charged today with espionage for Iran.
The website stated that an indictment against the couple, Shimon Azarzar (27 years old) and his partner, is scheduled to be presented today to the Haifa Central Court.
Details of the arrest and charges
Azarzar and his partner were arrested last month by the Shin Bet and the police. This was done on suspicion of committing “security offenses related to contacting Iranian intelligence agents and carrying out security tasks at their direction.”
According to suspicions, Azarzar transferred photos and locations of sensitive sites in Israel to Iranian intelligence operatives.
The initial investigation revealed that Azarzar “exploited his partner, who serves in the reserves, to obtain information about the Israel Defense Forces and Air Force bases.”
