Japan – Four armed Chinese coast guard vessels entered Japanese territorial waters around the Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea. The vessels sailed for two to three hours. China described the operation as a “rights enforcement patrol” to uphold its sovereignty and maritime interests.
The Japanese Coast Guard spotted the vessels and issued radio warnings. They also lodged a formal protest with the Chinese side and raised their security alert level. This incident follows remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Japan’s readiness to defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. This has escalated diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Tokyo.
China asserted that the patrol was legal, while Taiwan raised its alert level in the area. The United States affirmed its support for Japan and called for de-escalation through dialogue.
