Washington, USA – Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa arrived in the US capital, Washington, on Sunday, on an official visit that is the first by a Syrian president to the United States.
A summit meeting between President al-Sharaa and US President Donald Trump is scheduled for Monday at the White House. This meeting comes amid reports of intensive efforts to finalize a comprehensive agreement between the two countries.
A comprehensive deal is on the table.
The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported earlier that President Trump is working on a comprehensive deal with Syria. According to the newspaper, these understandings include key points, such as Syria joining the international coalition against ISIS. Additionally, they include reaching security understandings with Israel and Damascus’s intention to join the Abraham Accords.
In contrast, President al-Sharaa is seeking a complete lifting of US and European sanctions imposed on Syria. Such a lifting would open the door to investment and funding for reconstruction projects.
Intensive diplomatic tour
President al-Sharaa’s visit to Washington comes as a continuation of an intensive diplomatic tour. He recently led a government delegation to the presidential segment of the COP30 climate summit, held on November 6 and 7 in Belém, Brazil. During the summit, he met with a number of heads of state and government, as well as representatives of international organizations.
President al-Sharaa also visited New York City last September. The visit was to participate in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. He also held meetings with a large number of leaders and representatives of participating countries.
