Nepal – Nepalese authorities have announced the resumption of international flights at Tribhuvan International Airport in the capital Kathmandu, after a hiatus of several months due to health restrictions and precautionary measures related to the coronavirus pandemic.
This step comes as part of the government’s efforts to revitalize the aviation and tourism sector, which is one of the main pillars of the national economy.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation explained that the resumption of flights includes connecting Kathmandu with a number of Asian, European and American countries, while adhering to health protocols to ensure the safety of passengers and flight crew.
She confirmed that the airport has undergone major upgrades to its infrastructure and safety systems, ensuring its ability to handle the large numbers of passengers expected to arrive during the upcoming tourist season.
Nepalese officials indicated that the decision would lead to a tangible economic recovery, through increased tourism and support for hotels, restaurants and related services.
In addition to attracting foreign investment to the country, the resumption of flights reflects Nepal’s desire to enhance its image as a safe and attractive tourist destination, especially given its fame for the Himalayan scenery and Kathmandu’s heritage temples.
Analysts also considered that reopening the airport would strengthen economic and diplomatic relations with friendly countries by facilitating the movement of travelers, businesspeople, and cultural and commercial exchange.
The tourism sector hopes that the decision will lead to a gradual return of activity to pre-pandemic levels, with an increased flow of international flights and adventure tourism in the Himalayas, which is a global destination for climbing and exploration enthusiasts.
