Bangladesh – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has highlighted the tragic conditions faced by Rohingya refugees in Bangladeshi camps. It warned that hundreds of thousands of children are at serious risk due to poverty, malnutrition, and lack of access to education.
The report issued by the organization stated that more than one million Rohingya Muslim refugees are living in dire conditions in overcrowded camps in the Cox’s Bazar region. Most lack access to clean water and basic healthcare, while children are forced to work or beg to provide for their families.
UNICEF stressed that the suffering of these refugees “has become unbearable.” It called on the international community to increase humanitarian support and funding for programs dedicated to providing education and healthcare for children. It also noted that more than 40% of Rohingya children are completely out of school.
The report added that worsening poverty, unemployment, and social isolation within the camps threaten to create a “lost generation” deprived of the most basic necessities of life. It also warned that ignoring the crisis will lead to disastrous long-term consequences.
The Rohingya crisis is one of the world’s largest refugee crises. Hundreds of thousands have fled Myanmar since 2017 to escape violence and persecution. This comes amid the absence of a lasting political solution that would restore their rights and dignity.
