Kabul, Afghanistan – Tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan have escalated following the collapse of a new round of peace talks. The Kabul government issued a strongly worded warning to Islamabad, asserting that it “will not remain silent forever” in the face of what it described as “repeated provocations.”
The Afghan Foreign Ministry stated that its patience was wearing thin regarding what it considers Pakistani border incursions. It emphasized that Afghanistan would not tolerate continued “aggression or interference in its internal affairs.” This statement referred to military operations conducted by Pakistani forces in border areas, under the pretext of pursuing members of the Pakistani Taliban.
For its part, Islamabad called for restraint and a resumption of dialogue. However, it held Kabul responsible for the escalating activity of armed groups operating from Afghan territory. It asserted that security in the region requires “genuine cooperation, not an exchange of accusations.”
Observers believe that the failure of the recent talks has returned relations between the two countries to their previous state of tension. This comes amidst an exchange of accusations regarding support for extremist groups, which threatens further escalation along their volatile border.
