Brazil – In a move described as historic and revealing Brazil’s unbridled ambition to join the ranks of major powers, Brazil announced the launch of the first nuclear submarine in Latin America, becoming the first country in the region to possess this type of advanced military technology.

The new submarine—the result of a long-standing collaboration between the Brazilian Navy and national nuclear energy companies—represents a significant leap forward in the country’s defense capabilities. It also strengthens its strategic presence in the Atlantic Ocean.

Analysts believe this move puts Brazil in indirect confrontation with the traditional nuclear submarine powers, namely the United States, Russia, and France. It also gives Brazil a new bargaining chip in the global balance of power.

Conversely, several observers have expressed concern about the potential for an arms race in Latin America. This comes amid official Brazilian assurances that the program is solely for defensive purposes.
