In an incident that caused widespread shock in political and media circles, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum
was subjected to an attempted public harassment during her tour of the historic center of Mexico City.
Videos circulating on social media showed the moment
a man approached the Mexican president while she was speaking to citizens.
He put his arm around her and tried to kiss her,
before grabbing her inappropriately from behind.
One of the accompanying officers quickly intervened and pushed him away.
The incident sparked a wave of outrage in the Mexican street.
Activists and human rights advocates have called for increased security measures
around the Mexican president and for the harasser to be held accountable immediately.
They considered what happened to be a blatant violation of
the state’s prestige and women’s rights at the same time.
