Nepal – Nepalese authorities, in cooperation with the Italian consulate, have announced the deaths of three Italian climbers in the Himalayas. Rescue teams are still searching for seven others who remain missing.
The Italian Consul General in Kolkata, India, who is responsible for Nepal, arrived in Kathmandu this morning. His aim is to coordinate directly with Nepalese authorities and search teams, in close cooperation with the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to the official statement, the deaths of Alessandro Caputo (whose body was recovered from the Manaslo summit area) and Stefano Varonato (whose body was also recovered from the Manaslo summit area) have been confirmed. Paolo Cocco’s body was taken to a hospital designated for foreigners.
The other seven, including Marco Di Marcello and Marcus Kirchler, went missing in the Yalong Ri area. There is no confirmed information about their whereabouts.
Authorities reported that several areas in the Himalayas have recently experienced a series of avalanches. This has resulted in numerous climbers falling and has hampered communication between diplomatic officials, local teams, and rescue crews.
Rescue teams are continuing intensive search operations in an attempt to find the missing climbers, amid the challenges of harsh weather and difficult terrain in the area.
