France – Ten people were injured, four seriously, on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, after a 35-year-old man rammed his car into pedestrians and cyclists on Île d’Oléron. The island is located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of La Rochelle in western France.
Prosecutor Arnaud Larraiz said the driver, known for his prior criminal record, “deliberately struck several pedestrians and cyclists” along the island’s main road. He was immediately arrested and is being investigated for attempted murder.
The prosecutor added that the driver shouted “Allahu Akbar” in Arabic when he was stopped, but his motives remain unclear. The incident occurred between the towns of Doulous-d’Oléron and Saint-Pierre-d’Oléron, and the mayor of Doulous-d’Oléron confirmed that the suspect is a resident of the town.
Local authorities are now investigating to determine the motives behind the incident and assess its severity, while the injured are receiving the necessary medical care.
