Tehran, Iran – The United Nations has expressed grave concern over what it described as an “escalating wave of repression” in Iran. It noted an increase in executions in the weeks following recent Israeli attacks in the region.
The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights stated that Iranian authorities have intensified their campaigns of arrests and harassment against dissidents and activists. They have also accelerated the execution of those convicted in political and security cases.
The report added that this escalation comes at a time of internal tension and a deterioration in public freedoms in the country. This occurs amidst growing international calls to halt executions and respect Tehran’s international human rights obligations.
The United Nations called on the Iranian government to halt what it described as the “excessive use of the death penalty as a tool of political intimidation.” It stressed that the solution lies not in repression but in dialogue and respect for human dignity.
