Moscow, Russia – The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Friday that it had thwarted a planned terrorist attack in the Krasnodar region of southern Russia. The attack targeted a vital railway facility.
The Russian news agency TASS reported that the attack was orchestrated by a man born in 1981. He intended to set fire to electrical equipment on a railway line.
Security operation and thwarting the plot
The Russian Federal Security Service confirmed that the man was planning his terrorist act on behalf of a “pro-Ukrainian terrorist organization”.
The suspect was arrested “as he approached the scene of the crime,” thus preventing the execution of the plan. A criminal case has been opened against the man accused of planning the terrorist attack.
Second foiled operation in Stavropol
This announcement comes just two days after a similar plot was foiled in the Stavropol region. On October 29, Federal Security Service officers arrested a Ukrainian intelligence agent who was planning to bomb a transport facility.
The accused, a resident of Georgievsk (born in 1980), contacted a representative of a Ukrainian terrorist organization via the Telegram app. Following instructions, he photographed the targeted transport facility, purchased components for a crude explosive device, and concealed them.
The man was arrested while surveying the site of the planned attack. A criminal case has been opened under Article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code (preparation of a terrorist act).
The defendant in the Stavropol case faces up to 20 years in prison. The Federal Security Service (FSB) indicated that he may also be charged with treason.
These successive operations confirm the tightening of surveillance by Russian security services. They focus on activities they classify as terrorist and linked to pro-Ukrainian groups within Russian territory.
