Kyiv, Ukraine – The Ukrainian government announced on Thursday the closure of its embassy in the Cuban capital, Havana. This move comes amid escalating tensions between Kyiv and some countries allied with Moscow.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry explained that the decision was part of a “restructuring of diplomatic missions” abroad. However, it did not conceal what it described as “difficulties in cooperation” with the Cuban government over the past two years.
Cuba is among the countries that have maintained close ties with Russia since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. This has led observers to link Kyiv’s recent decision to the divergent political stances between the two countries.
Havana, for its part, has not issued an official comment on the move. Media reports have suggested that consular files may be transferred to the Ukrainian embassy in Mexico in the near future.
