KARACHI, Pakistan – Police in Karachi announced Monday the arrest of four suspects in last month’s assassination of prominent journalist Imtiaz Ali Mir, an attack that sparked widespread controversy in Pakistani media and political circles.
Accusing a neighboring country
Karachi police said in an official statement, according to Pakistani media, that the defendants belonged to an organized terrorist cell that was planning to carry out additional assassinations within the city. The police noted that the group’s leader resided in a neighboring country and was responsible for financing the field personnel and providing them with specific “target lists.”
Officials explained that the suspects were arrested following a meticulous security operation carried out by counterterrorism units, which resulted in the seizure of weapons and communications equipment. They confirmed that investigations are ongoing to identify the remaining suspects and their funding networks.
controversial opinions
In a press conference held by the Sindh Home Minister, he indicated that the motive behind Mir’s assassination was linked to his “pro-Israel” media stance. This sparked widespread reactions within the press, who demanded greater protection for journalists in the country.
Imtiaz Ali Mir is a prominent Pakistani journalist known for his bold political analysis. He has previously received threats due to his controversial views on regional politics, particularly Pakistan’s foreign relations.
In recent years, Pakistan has witnessed a surge in attacks targeting journalists and activists. The country ranks high on the “dangerousness of journalism” index, according to reports from international organizations. Meanwhile, authorities confirm that they are making strenuous efforts to prosecute those involved in such crimes.
