California, USA – A California Highway Patrol vehicle was struck by metal fragments from an unexpected artillery shell explosion during a live-fire demonstration by the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton.
This occurred during the Marine Corps’ 250th anniversary celebrations, which were attended by US Vice President J.D. Vance.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed in a joint press release with Fox News Digital that the incident occurred while its officers were assisting in the reopening of I-5. This coincided with a military parade.
She noted that the 155mm shell exploded outside the designated impact area and its shrapnel fell on one of the patrol vehicles.
No injuries… investigations are ongoing
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident, and the use of live ammunition in the parade was immediately halted after the Marines were notified of the incident.
“This is an unusual and concerning situation,” said Tony Coronado, Chief of the Highway Patrol’s Border Division. “It is extremely rare for live fire training to be conducted on active roadways, and the safety of citizens and our officers is paramount.”
Camp Pendleton confirmed an investigation into the incident, noting that the parade underwent a thorough security assessment. However, the explosion occurred “outside the designated impact area.” All gunfire was suspended immediately after the incident, according to a statement from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force.
Mutual accusations between the White House and the California Governor
In the same context, the incident sparked political controversy, with Vice President Vance’s office accusing California Governor Gavin Newsom of spreading “fake news” and considering it an attempt to exploit him politically.
In response, Newsom launched a scathing attack on the administration of President Donald Trump and his vice president, saying in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter):
“Trump and Vance are putting people’s lives on the line for a show… If you want to honor our troops, open the government and pay them.”
Review and recommendations
The Highway Patrol recommended a comprehensive review of planning and coordination between federal and local authorities to ensure the safety of such events in the future, especially when held near public roads.
The Marines’ final statement affirmed their full commitment to investigating the incident and incorporating its findings into future training exercises. This aims to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
Camp Pendleton is one of the largest U.S. Marine Corps bases and regularly hosts live-fire exercises.
The parade, held Saturday, coincided with the Marines’ 250th anniversary celebration. Prominent military and civilian figures, including Vice President Vance, attended the parade.
