London, UK—Ken McCallum, Director General of the British domestic intelligence agency MI5, has warned that the United Kingdom faces escalating threats.
This is one of a number of entities he described as hostile, such as Russia, Iran, and China.
The threat of terrorism remains “enormous”
He noted that the threat of terrorism remains “enormous,” with Al-Qaeda and ISIS seeking to incite potential attackers.
McCallum said in his annual speech at the agency’s headquarters in London: “In 2025, MI5 will face a greater volume and diversity of threats.
Those imposed by terrorists and government actors, more than I have ever seen before.”
Ugly methods
McCallum noted that the number of individuals being investigated for state-sponsored threat activities
rose by 35%, noting that hostile countries are increasingly resorting to the “ugly” methods typically used by terrorists.
Russian and Iranian threats
He said his agency had disrupted “a series of hostile surveillance plots” originating in Russia.
Promising to continue exposing “those who take orders from Russian thugs” and tracking down those who issue the orders.
He noted that Tehran is “frantically” trying to silence its critics internationally.
He confirmed that MI5 had tracked more than 20 potentially deadly plots backed by Iran.
Accusations against China
The head of British intelligence accused China of “cyber espionage” and luring academics.
Secretly interfering in public life in the United Kingdom and harassing pro-democracy dissidents.
He expressed frustration at the collapse of the espionage case against British defendants accused of spying for Beijing.
Daily threat
He confirmed that China poses a “daily threat” to the UK’s national security.
McCallum told reporters: “Of course, I am frustrated when opportunities to pursue activities that threaten national security are not taken up for whatever reason.”
When asked if China posed a threat, he replied, “Of course, yes, they do, every day.”
