Baghdad, Iraq – In a move aimed at enhancing the security of its energy infrastructure, Iraq has officially begun using locally manufactured drones to monitor oil fields and facilities.

In addition to connecting all sites to a network of high-resolution thermal cameras, images and information are transmitted directly to the relevant security headquarters.

Accurate air traffic control

Lieutenant General Dhafer Al-Hussaini, Director General of the Energy Police, told the government-run Al-Sabah newspaper on Thursday that this step is part of an integrated security program launched on Wednesday.

It aims to enhance the protection of oil facilities, pipeline networks, and wells across the country, in cooperation with the Military Industrialization Authority.

Al-Hussaini explained that Iraqi drones have begun their missions to cover and monitor oil sites, while modern thermal cameras have been installed along the pipeline network.

This allows real-time monitoring of any suspicious movements or sabotage attempts, and sending images directly to security command and control rooms.

Tangible results in combating smuggling

Lieutenant General Al-Husseini pointed out that the Energy Police forces succeeded in reducing petroleum product smuggling by 98%.

No security breaches have been recorded in the oil pipeline network recently, which is evidence of the success of the security plans in place.

He added that these achievements were the result of pursuing those involved and referring them to the relevant judicial authorities, in addition to dismantling a number of smuggling dens in governorates such as Baghdad, Najaf, and Salah al-Din.

Strategic importance of oil facilities

Oil facilities, fields, and pipeline networks cover vast areas of Iraq, making them easy targets for terrorist and extremist groups in the past.

Especially during the years of sectarian violence and security unrest, which caused significant damage to infrastructure and affected oil exports, particularly from the northern regions.

Through these new measures, the Iraqi government seeks to protect its vital energy sector from future threats and ensure the safe and regular continuity of production and export operations, as Baghdad seeks to strengthen its position as a major global oil exporter.
