Damascus, Syria – Transitional Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Wednesday.
This is for the first time since he took power in Syria.
The Kremlin announced that “the Russian president will hold talks today with his Syrian counterpart, who is on a working visit to Russia.”
He also added that the two presidents will discuss the situation in the Middle East, as well as strengthen relations between the two countries.
Assad’s fate
Meanwhile, an official Syrian source revealed that Sharia will officially ask Russia to extradite former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
This is to try him for what he said were crimes against Syrians.
The source also added that the Syrian president will also hold talks on the continued presence of the Russian naval base in Tartus and the air base in Hmeimim.
first visit
This is Al-Sharaa’s first visit to Moscow since opposition factions led him to overthrow the former president last year.
Note that Putin had granted Assad humanitarian asylum at the time, and since then he has not seen the former president anywhere in the Russian capital.
It is noteworthy that the investigating judge in Damascus, Tawfiq Al-Ali, had announced at the end of last September (2025) the issuance of an arrest warrant in absentia against Al-Assad.
This is in preparation for following up on the case internationally through the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol).
